Mobile TV trial
extended by
Asian provider

ASIAN broadcaster Singapore Digital has announced the extension to its TV2GO DVB-H mobile TV trial, which begun in June 2007, to the end of November 2008. This next phase of Singapore Digital's TV2GO DVB-H trial is designed to provide viewers with additional content, plus interactive functionality. Trialists will have the opportunity to road-test interactive chat-room services, experience teletext-to-mobile, as well as interact with real-time financial services. According to Singapore Digital CEO, Giulio Dorrucci, the TV2GO DVB-H trial extension provides a valuable opportunity to extend the trial's technical capabilities and obtain market feedback from viewers on new applications and content. "As part of the trial, we are conducting a number of technology studies to ensure the mobile TV transmission is of the highest quality in a number of locations– from residential streets and high-density apartment blocks, to subway lines and shopping centres," he said. "Market studies and focus groups will also be engaged to improve our understanding of viewers' preferred content, including when and where they prefer to use it."

  WELCOME TO C2M MONTHLY
Countdown to IBC 2008
HERE we go again: No sooner do we arrive at what passes for a summer than we have to get ready for this year’s IBC. As ever, the show will cover all aspects of the creation, management and delivery of content. This years’ show will really focus on the rapid growth in the consumption of broadcast content on devices other than TV screens such as to be found on mobile, IPTV and also the nascent digital signage applications. In addition to the huge number of exhibitors, the show will offer a huge number of briefings, conferences and other presentations designed to educate broadcast professionals on what is out there. This year, the opening day will explore how consuming content across devices as diverse as mobile phones, multimedia players and other consoles is impacting the broadcast value chain.
Perhaps of most interest will be a free session hosted by Ken Blakeslee, Chairman of WebMobility Ventures entitled “Entertaining the Mobile Audience - Games and Rich Content Production and Distribution to an Interactive Audience of One” which will look at the dynamics of conceiving, designing, monetising and delivering entertaining content to the 4th screen. Mobile will also be the focus of “What Caught My Eye” in which an expert reports on the notable innovations to be found on the exhibition floor. Mike Short, VP R&D at Telefonica O2 and President of the Mobile Data Association will unveil the most exciting mobile-specific innovations to be found at IBC2008.  Another highlight includes tutorials from DVB & ETSI outlining the evolution of the Digital Video Broadcast standard to accommodate a number of distribution scenarios including DVB-H for handhelds.
For more information go to www.ibc.org. C2M will be there and we’d be very please to see you.

Orange launches mobile magazine
ORANGE has launched an ad-supported video mobile magazine service on Orange World - 'Zap!' that will offer free video clips to all customers with a video enabled 2G or 3G handset on both Pay As You Go and Pay Monthly contracts. The business model is based on allowing customers to access video clips for free in exchange for watching advertising before their chosen video. 'Zap!' will feature celebrity, lifestyle, news and entertainment clips from broadcasters such as ITV, Sky, BBC Worldwide and ITN. The magazine service will allow advertisers to buy mobile video pre and post roll ad spots, as well as companion banners that have been demographically targeted which makes the experience far more relevant for the consumer.
These ads will also only play a set number of times per customer. Recent Orange research into ad-funded content has provided the justification for the launch. The research found that ad-funded services could offer new ways of reaching audiences and the potential to generate new business models within the industry as mobile media users are extremely favourable towards viewing ads in exchange for free content.
'Zap!' will be refreshed throughout the day, to ensure there is always something new to view. As well as having no cost to view the videos, the 'Zap!' service will also be free to browse. The service is being managed by IMP Media who have worked with Orange to create a magazine style experience that is tailored over time to meet the individual viewer's interests. Mobile advertising company Rhythm NewMedia is both selling and serving the advertisements on the Orange portal and has already signed up a number of advertisers including Twentieth Century Fox, Wrigley's, Barclaycard, Cisco, Nissan, Paramount movies and Heat magazine.
